‘In a Forest of Red, Green and Blue’

11 May - 17 June
Bringing together works by Cécile B. Evans and Troika for the first time, the duo exhibition 'In a forest of Red, Green and Blue' speculates on new ways and forms of being(s), inviting reflection on machine vision, non-human intelligent life and multi-species agency.
Troika's paintings depicting webcam stills of forest fires are shown alongside their new sculptures, a group of animal-plant-human-software hybrids that draw on Troika's collection of digitised sculptures and objects gathered from musea online libraries.
In the midst of a forest, ablaze with the colors of technology, a creature unlike any other takes flight. A being of human, animal, and plant ancestry. In the realm of early figurative art, animals were often depicted as mere props in human stories. But now, through the digitization of museum collections, these creatures stand as equals to their human counterparts. A virtual animal kingdom that now inspires the creation of a new species, one that traverses the boundary between human and animal, between nature and machine, bringing to life a previously unknown world of mythical beings.
Their natural habitat, Richard Brautigam's cybernetic forest filled with pines and electronics, is depicted as an apocalyptic scene, with a blazing fire threatening the very existence of these creatures. Both paintings and sculptures exhibit Troika's exploration of the ways we engage with the natural world.
The exhibition is accompanied by an essay written by Dehlia Hannah and entitled “Maladaptation to the Screen”, and takes place in collaboration with Layr, Vienna.
