ELECTROPROBE INSTALLATION (Gijón Magnética), 2008,
LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijon

'Gijón Magnética' is an electromagnetic environment specially created for the 'Electroprobe'. Named after the city of Gijón where the work is exhibited, the installation presents a chaotic assemblage of electric/electronic objects sourced from the Gijón area; electric appliances, mobile phones chargers, clocks, LEDs, transformers and a custom made 'Gijón' neon sign contribute to a sonic landscape consisting of glitches, bubbles, drones and bleeps possible to explore through the 'Electroprobe'

Concept

As with 'Magnetic Guangzhou' and 'Shit! I forgot the iPod' the various objects are arranged by their electromagnetic tunes in order to create a magnetic 'orchestra' that the user is able to hear with the probe. We wanted to reveal their dreams and inaudible dialogues, while creating an alternative taxonomy of the objects in an apparently chaotic sound organ.

'Gijón Magnética' is part of the Nowhere/Now/Here exhibition at the Laboral, Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, Asturias. The exhibition reflects on and suggests new ways forward for contemporary design, revealing projects across new technologies, culture and ethics, alongside the rich complexities and constant strangeness of human life. The exhibition was curated by Roberto Feo and Rosario Hurtado of El Último Grito and featured amongst others Martino Gamper, Noam Toran, Eelko MoorerDaniel Charny and Gabi Klasmer. Troika likes to thank the curators and the Laboral team for all their support and help.
