JAMES CARRIGAN,
Invitation and Exhibition Identity for artist James Carrigan

We designed the invitation for James Carrigan's show at the Design Center in Barnsley where his Machine # 1.4 and Machine #1.3 were exhibited in January 2006. Furthermore we designed his subsequent solo show identity at Brompton later on that year resulting in invitations, posters, title design and website. This was part of Temporary Art Space, including James´works: machine #1.4 (2005), machine #3.1 - Wapping Project (2006) and machine #5.1 - Butler Gallery (2006).

Concept

For the Design Center in Barnsley we wanted to create something that reflected James' approach while challenging the format of the typical exhibition invitation. James Carrigan's work sits between architecture, design and sculpture. The unique character of his work delivered the hook for designing an invite that is a tactile object rather than a two-dimensional flyer. The design for the flyer formed the base for the subsequent identity work for James´solo show.

Design and development

For the invitation the images are photographic prints, and the text was foil blocked onto a 2000 micron card board, giving the invitation a rough and architectural feel on one hand, and a clean, designed and curated look on the other.
