Since primeval antiquity trees have been a source of awe, wonder, respect, and meaning, enriching our history, legends and folklore. Deeply embedded in our cultural symbolism they have become Nature's visible symbol of power and grace, its meaning laden with magical associations.
Troika imagined a tree that, instead of losing its leaves in the winter months, is rendered trunkless. Trunk, branches and twigs are erased leaving behind what is inherently the tree's most fleeting part; this dome of foliage forming a surreal space that challenges the viewer to contemplate on the possibility of nature, whilst absent in a man-made environment.
Model For A Trunkless Tree was commissioned by Ability Group for Waldorf Astoria Syon Park Hotel and curated by Artwise Curators.
