A pyramid of quartzite and metallurgical silicon rock rests on a hexagonal base. Quartzite is the raw material for industrial grade silicon, which is refined to a staggering purity of 99.999999999% then used in the manufacture of semiconductors, solar panels, and modern electronics. The vertical axis of the work represents refinement, while the title denotes that tiny fraction of material which escapes this process. The work alludes to the concentration and rarefaction of wealth and material assets under conditions of late capitalism. Located in the reflecting pond in front of the Langen Foundation, the work’s apex points to the 0.000000001% dimension of indeterminacy within the rigid structure of today’s technosphere.
